A Critical Analysis of Romanticism Art

A work of art that I found very interesting and reoccurring during my research of Romanticism in art was Théodore Géricault's painting The Raft of the Medusa. Painted in 1818 by the French Géricault, the work is commonplace as one of the most important pieces of Romantic art during the 19th and 20th centuries. The painting displays the crew of the French naval ship the Meduse struggling against nature to survive after their ship wrecked. It is important to note that a major theme in early Romanticism was terror and fear, especially pertaining to the power of nature. Géricault's work does just this as it accurately portrays and insights terror to exemplify the power that nature has over man. The painting also displays deep emotion and drama, portraying a realistic event, yet stylistically using Romanticism traits to match the era's style. Personally, I think the main purpose and message of the work is the key Romantic idea that nature is more powerful than mankind.
In relation to today's society, the painting reminds me a lot of the global crisis that the earth and nature is facing pertaining to global warming, pollution, and humane impact. More specifically this painting makes me think about the current wildfires in California. Due to mankind, the environment is fighting back and bringing destruction upon those who harm the Earth. In comparing the two, the painting uses the intense waves to represent natures strength and superiority, while in California's current situation nature's strength is exemplified by the raging flames of the wildfires.

Conner,
ReplyDeleteOverall really nice post. For my CA post I was bouncing between this painting and the one I chose, but it was definitely a close contest. I like how you explained the painting in the beginning, and the way you added "the key Romantic idea that nature is more powerful than mankind" which is 100% true and a nice touch to segway into your second paragraph. The wildfires in California is a good example of the environment fighting back in my opinion, and obviously something needs to change.
Hello Conner, I really enjoyed reading your analysis of the painting you chose. The way you related to today is really well done, and made me think about the painting for a good while. It's unconventional, but really well done nonetheless and I agree that it has a real connection to the wildfires today. I also agree that it does follow many of Romanticism's trends, and that the emotion and drama is a key part of what makes it such a Romantic work.
ReplyDeleteHi Conner! It is not the first time I see this apinting in different classmates blogs. I think is a normal selection since it is very famous. However, I really like this painting cause each person interprets it in a defferent way and I think that is very cool. I consider that your way to connect the apinting to the presentis very interesting because is a reflection of your own interpretation of the painting and the way that you see it.
ReplyDeleteConnor, I enjoy the painting you picked out. I have seen this painting in history books and on walls, but I have never thought about it relating to today. I thought you made a strong connection between the painting that represents exploration to todays climate. I think you made a super clear blog post.
ReplyDeleteI was able to follow your reasoning for why this painting is still relevant and is popular today. keep up the great work and I cant wait to read what you have for next week.
Hey connor, Love the painting you picked. The analysis that you put out was a good read. Comparing it in modern day was a great touch to the whole post and left a lasting impression. The connections that were made in the comparison shows that you did the assignment as it was intended. Great read
ReplyDeleteHey Connor, this painting by Géricault definitely depicts the romanticism era. Mother nature is very powerful and people do not realize that. I like how you connected the painting to today's societal issues like global warming, pollution, and natural disasters. Society has to come together and start taking care of the environment we live in. Romanticism explores the beauty of nature and I feel if society had transcendentalism in them then we can preserve this planet.
ReplyDeleteHey Conner, the painting you picked depicts the romanticism era perfectly. You did a great job connecting the painting to the wildfires and modern day events though, also highlighting how it relates to the time period. You made me take a third read because I was so intrigued, so props to you.
