Modernism: A Critical Analysis

Modernism Art was a new and unconventional artistic expression era in the mid 19th century to the mid 20th century. Artists transitioned from prior eras and trends to create a new style that more accurately represented the culture, experiences, and feelings of the new modern and industrialized world. Their goal was to create art that "better reflected the realities and hopes of modern societies" (Tate.org). Many of the visual art depicted a twist or unconventional aspect that was unique to the viewers of the time. From using shapes, to creating pieces in an abstract manner, the modernism period shaped many traits of art today.
I provided the painting Metamorphosis of Narcissus by the influential Salvador Dali because it reminded me of the many modern and abstract works of today that owe much of their inspiration to the modernism era. Dali's new and unique style represented the everchanging world of the time. He presented society in an odd and deranged way that not only criticized modern society but also represented and promoted it. In relation to today's society, many of the same ideas that Dali expressed through his paintings in the modernism era shine through in current works of abstract and modern art. Likewise, many of today's visual works that resemble the style of mid-century modernism also focus on the idea of our current developing and shifting society, whether that be relating towards ideas of politics, culture, or adapting industrialization.

  1. Hey conner! Nice work. I think that your connection between the painting and the present is as simple as effective. Sometimes the simpler the better. I also didn't think about that before and you are right! it looks very similar to some "weird" (I dont understand muc of art) pieces which meaning is so difficult to understand. Great backgroud of the style of the artist as well.

  2. Hey Conner, I think you did a great job on the critical analysis for the topic Modernism. The piece of artwork you chose is very different than the arts I've seen in previous posts, I think this makes your blog post stand out more against the others and also intrigued me more to read on. I think you did a good job relating the painting to the modern period as well as now. Nice work.

  3. Hello Connor,
Thank you for sharing, I like how you connected Salvador Dali's work (one of my favorites) to modern day works. His unique style and creativity is very prevalent in todays day and age and it is awesome to see how artwork has shifted and molded itself into what it is today. Artists today are very creative and I feel it was hugely impacted by the Modernism era.

  4. Hey Conner, I think you did a great job quickly analyzing and summarizing the modernism movement. The painting by Salvador Dali was very interesting and really show how times are everchanging as you said as well as how they have stayed the same in some respects. I enjoy how art can incorporate methods used hundreds of years ago while still including modern day thoughts and ideas.
