Post-Modernism Roots in Today's Architecture

One thing I found very interesting about the postmodernism era was the architecture utilized during this period. I think one thing that really makes many architects style's standout is the use of unique new ideas, schemes, colors, and designs. In the mid 20th century with the rise of post modernism, architects and designers began to create buildings that really stood out. They would use new and sometimes unnecessary techniques to create a visually questionable yet pleasing structure to usher in the era of postmodernism. These buildings were a staple in expediting a new more modern take on architectural design and changed the views that many had towards architecture as an art. Yet as the era began to fade so did the unique and abstract designs that many architects used to create art like structures.

The structure pictured above, a great example of post-modernism architecture, reminds me of many buildings that I've seen either around various cities or in pictures during certain CM courses. Although this specific style of architecture has declined in the past, I believe that it may be on the rise again in today's society. Many new buildings, focus on being uniquely designed and visually pleasing in sometimes absurd and unconventional ways. Although I can't specifically think of any current projects in the works that display postmodernism architecture, I can use Dubai as an example to display similar type of architecture that is on the rise. Dubai's current rapid modernization and building boasts many structures that have a basis in the postmodern style, displaying large, unique, and artistic values in relation to the post modern era. On another note, although a bit older, Boston's City Hall perfectly exemplifies that same type of postmodernism aesthetic architecture, despite it being under constant criticism for it's "unpleasant look".

  1. Hey Connor, nice post! I totally agree that postmodernism definitely influenced architects to design unique structures. A city to check out that definitely displays postmodernism architecture is Chicago because each building is spaced out from each other and they are uniquely designed as well. Also, I agree that postmodernism is declining and in today's world of architecture the primary focus is sustainability, plus how its incorporated into the design.

  2. You're defiantly right Connor when you said Postmodernism era is fading away. We don't really have much of those Postmodernism buildings anymore, now its large skyscrapers and tall curvy buildings. It kind of reminds how music changes ever generation. Music from the 1960's to the 1980's to the 1990's, 2000's and 2010. It all changes sooner or later. While I was reading your post I kept on thinking, what the next type of building are unsymmetrical buildings? Symmetrical buildings have been a thing since forever, and I haven't really seen any unsymmetrical buildings.

  3. Hey Connor! I really enjoyed your critical analysis on postmodernism architecture. I love how you talk about a postmodernism style of architecture being on the rise again. How newer buildings try to be unconventionally visually pleasing. How the more absurd, the more people tend to look at it or talk about it. I also enjoyed how you talk about Boston's City Hall being under constant criticism because of its postmodernism style.
